What is intermittent fasting?
Intermittent means ‘cyclic or recurring’ and Fasting means ‘abstaining from eating’. Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that allows eating and fasting for predetermined periods in a day. Instead of focussing on what to eat, it takes a new approach and focuses on when to eat. Here is a video- Dr. Oz Intermittent Fasting, that will explain the process along with intermittent fasting benefits.
Which are the types of intermittent fasting?
There are mainly 3 types of intermittent fasting that people used to perform. However, a new type called OMAD has recently joined the list. Let’s check:
Whole Day Fasting: You need to fast for one to two non-consecutive days a week. On fasting days, you need to consume 500 calories (200 calories to be consumed in the form of protein). You can either have one meal with 500 calories or spread out the eating schedule throughout the day.
Alternate Day Fasting: For the first 24 hours, you need to consume 500 calories with 200 calories to be consumed in protein form. You can either have one meal or spread out over the day. For the next 24 hours, you can eat whatever you want and whenever you want. However, it is preferred that you eat fruits, salads, and proteins in more amounts instead of carbohydrates.
Time-restricted Feeding: Every day, you need to fast for 16 to 20 hours a day and consume nothing but water and zero-calorie tea. In the remaining 4 to 8 hours, you can eat whatever you want. However, eating healthy is preferred. Most people choose the 8-hour fasting windows from 12 pm to 8 pm, or 10 am to 6 pm.
OMAD: You can call this a spinoff of intermittent fasting. OMAD stands for one meal a day. You can have one gigantic meal every day and then nothing the rest of the time. You eat whatever you want in one hour and then fast for 23 hours. This trend grew largely on Reddit with over 138k members on r/OMAD subreddit.
