Space-O Technologies built Paper Trader as a mobile application where people trade real stocks at real prices using virtual money. Users search any ticker, execute buy and sell orders, and watch profit and loss move exactly as it would in a live account. A watch list tracks stocks they are considering, and a following layer connects them to professional analysts and other investors. The app ships on iOS and Android, built with Swift, Objective-C, Java, and Node.js.

Paper Trader is a virtual stock trading app that lets people practice on real stocks in real time. Every price shown is a live market price. Every trade uses virtual money, so nothing is at stake except the lesson.

Our Approach to Building a Scalable Virtual Stock Trading App

The engagement covered UI/UX design, native iOS and Android builds, and quality assurance. A trading simulator only works if the market data behind it is genuinely accurate, since credibility collapses the moment prices lag reality.

Real-Time Stock Search and Listing

Requirement:

Users needed to find any stock quickly and see prices that reflected the current market rather than a delayed snapshot.

Solution:

We built a fast search and listing module backed by a live market data feed. Users look up real stocks, view current prices, and open any ticker directly to begin a virtual trade. Search speed matters here, because hesitation at the lookup stage breaks the feel of live trading.

Virtual Buy and Sell Execution

Requirement:

A paper trading app has to place trades that feel real while removing every financial consequence.

Solution:

The buy and sell flow executes against real-time prices using virtual balances. Users build positions exactly as they would in a live brokerage app, with identical mechanics and identical timing. The only difference is the money, which means the habits users form here transfer directly to real trading.

Profit and Loss Analysis

Requirement:

Practice teaches nothing unless users can see clearly how each decision performed across their holdings.

Solution:

The profit and loss module reports gains and losses per stock as a percentage. It also ranks positions against each other across the full portfolio. Users see not just whether they made money, but which specific choices carried the portfolio and which dragged on it.

Watch List

Requirement:

Users wanted to follow stocks they were interested in before deciding to commit a position.

Solution:

Any stock can be added to a personal watch list for daily price updates and analysis. Watching a stock over several sessions before trading it is a core habit for new investors, so the feature exists to encourage exactly that behavior.

Analyst Following and Market Insight

Requirement:

Beginners learn faster with guidance, so the client asked for a social layer built around expert commentary.

Solution:

Users follow professional analysts and other investors on the platform. Insights and market commentary arrive as notifications rather than requiring users to go looking for them. New traders get context on why markets are moving, not just the numbers showing that they moved.

Market Data Integration and User Accounts

Requirement:

Simulator credibility depends on accurate pricing and the experience needed to persist for each user.

Solution:

We integrated an active stock market data source for live quotes across the app. User accounts store each trader’s virtual balance, open positions, watch list, and full trade history. Everything follows the user across devices, so practice carries forward rather than resetting.
