Instagram will order posts “based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post” instead of strictly reverse chronological.
The testing process will start slowly, first, you find that “all the posts will still be there, just in a different order.” However, low-quality posts might be filtered out completely. That simply means if you don’t check your feed until the next morning, but a friend whose photos you usually ‘Like’, posted something awe-inspiring the night before, it could look at the top of the feed though it is few hours old. This is basically how Facebook’s feed works and how Twitter reconfigured its feed in recent times.
