Did you know that I am known by many names? A prophet, a foreseer, a soothsayer and much more… That is because I know! I always know: everything; everywhere; everyone! But today I am in a technical mood. Do you remember the first mobile phone call? Sorry, of course you don’t! You younglings weren’t there. But I was and oh! such a panic it had created. ha ha ha… I have many more secrets in my belly, as you can see! Today, however, I have decided to tell it all, starting with the history of mobile apps.

A decade Later the first mobile phone materialized
IBM’s touch phone Simon contains the first apps and becomes the pioneer to the smartphones. The apps were, Calendar, Address Book, Notepad, Email, Calculator, World Clock, FaxCapability and Games.
Newton’s MessagePad was built by Apple, which contained basic apps like web, email, calendar, address book and more, similar to IBM’s Simon.
During the same time, 1990’s Psion EPOC comes into
being as a handheld mini computer, with apps like word
processor, database, spreadsheet and diary.
1997; Nokia phone, model number 6110, introduces gaming apps, starting with the Snake game to later adding adding games like Pong, Tetris, and Tic-Tac-Toe
1999; WAP or Wireless Application Protocol was made available for accessing web applications on phone.
2001, The first ever iPod was introduced with the storage capacity of a 1000 songs and containing apps like Solitaire and Brick.
The entry of J2ME/JME made it even easier for companies to create apps for their phones.
2007; Apple launches its very first iPhone, with only a few built-in apps and announces the opportunity for outside developers to make apps for the first time, in web 2.0 version.
2008; Apple launches the First version of an App Store, with 500 native apps.
2008; A couple of months after App store’s launch,Android launches its very own Android Market.
2009; Total apps downloads of the App Store reaches a whooping 1 Billion Downloads. Also Apple starts a campaign named ‘There’s an app for that!’ This campaign was so famous that Apple trademarked the campaign in 2010.
2009; The Blackberry’s App World is launched, making it the third biggest store that allows the downloading of apps.
2009; came the launch of Whatsapp, that changed the look of chatting apps completely. It created a landmark and a history in the name of apps.
2009; Another gaming app that took the world on an addictive tour, the launch of Angry Birds.
2010;Following the success of App Store closely,Android Market reached its Billion downloads too.
2010; Windows phone Store is launched making it the fourth largest store for apps in line.
2011; ‘App’ is voted as the word of the year.
2011; app users start spending more time on the apps, than the mobile web usage.
2011; The App Store has made space for 291,250 jobs since its launch.
2012; Android Market now gets a new name Google Play. And the total app downloads, from the App Store, reaches more than 25 billion.

2012; Candy Crush Saga is released on iOS.
2012; The ‘Draw Something’ reached a whooping 50 million downloads, in and within the 50 days of its launch.
2013; The Google Play Store has 50 Billion plus downloads.
2012; Instagram’s downloads increase from 12 million to 50 million in about 4 months.
2013; App Store makes available 1 million apps.
2014; Facebook releases a new messaging app.
2014; App Store reaches for the 75 billion app download rate.
2014; Gmail becomes the first individual app to reach the 1 billion downloads.
September 9, 2014; The Apple watch was launched. This saw a new height and a new beginning for the app stores, app users and the app developers, for using apps on a personalized wearable device.
This is where apps have made us reach. But future is knocking at our doorsteps too. The Hololens by Microsoft, will blur the difference between real world and virtual world and it is predicted that apps will have a role to play in this. See you in the future.
